Frank Watson Wood was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, a place he held in great affection and to which he returned throughout his life to paint buildings and local landscapes. Frank studied at South Kensington Art School (later the Royal College of Art) and Newcastle School of Art, after which he moved to Portsmouth in 1906 to focus on painting ships. His career took off after Edward VII and Queen Alexandra bought several watercolours from him, hanging one in the Royal Yacht. Wood is primarily remembered as a marine artist, regularly being commissioned by serving or retired officers to paint their ships.
