Donald Watson was a celebrated wildlife artist who lived in Edinburgh and Dalry for much of his life. His love of birds began with a visit to Midlothian Ornithologists' Club and from there he progressed to drawing birds in their habitats and exhibiting his work throughout the UK. In 1964 he was commissioned to illustrate British bird species in the Oxford Book of Birds and his paintings featured in many books thereafter. He had a special love of the hen harrier which he studied in detail in Galloway and wrote about in a book published by Poyser in 1977.
